I've been to a number of cupcake stores before, and I just never got them. Sure they were better than the average cupcake you'd get at the supermarket or maybe even better than the ones you make yourself, but they're still just cupcakes.
And then Kara's Cupcakes opened up in Oxbow (apparently she has 5 stores around the Bay Area and won the "Best Cupcake" award in 2008 from the readers of the SFGate) and changed my mind. These things are a bit pricey for cupcakes, but they are admittedly addictive. The cakes itself is fairly moist and rich but what makes the cupcakes are the fillings and creams. They're rich and flavorful whereas most cupcake creams are so sweet that you can't taste much of anything else. I suppose the creams and fillings are a little on the heavy side, but that's what the glass of milk is for. Our favorites is the Fleur de Sel (salt and chocolate with a caramel filling), with an honorable mention to the coconut and raspberry dazzle.

Price of our meal
About $3.25 per cupcake (and probably a quick jog afterwards). I never said it was a bargain, but they're still pretty tasty though.
