Why a blog?

I probably should’ve put NapaEats on a blog on day 1. Restaurant reviews do lend themselves to that kind of thing, and blogs have become so sophisticated that you can add a tremendous amount of additional functionality easily.

But a good chunk for why I started NapaEats was to play around with different web technologies even if I am, at best, a pidgin programmer. So, I built NapaEats on an open-source content management system called Plone which doesn’t exactly have the nicest learning curve for programming novices. But when I first saw it in this screencast, I did it anyway because it just looked so cool. Totally overkill for my simple site needs, but even though I don’t know what the heck I’m doing most of the times, it’s been fun in the same way that Sisyphus enjoyed that boulder. :-)

Now that I have that up and running, I thought it might be fun to do a blog to get some experience with WordPress and have a place for a more general, but still somewhat related, discussion. It’s fun to randomly blabber about things, and a blog just seemed like a better tool for that kind of thing vs. writing posts on a site.

I have to give a shout out to WebFaction who does the hosting for NapaEats. There’s just no way I’d be fooling around with all of this stuff on my own, especially with Plone, if it wasn’t for their master control panel, screencasts, and general support system.
